GIA 2010 Basics

Mission

"The Global Impact Apprentice Challenge, or GIA, is an opportunity for American high school students to collaborate with a partner school in the Middle East or North Africa on a service-learning project addressing an environmental issue of mutual concern in each of their communities. Through digital communication, joint service-learning initiatives and cultural exchange, GIA provides a unique forum for youth to collaborate on issues of both local and global concern."


Object of the Competition

To score the highest amount of points awarded by an expert panel of judges. Points will be accrued based upon a combination of a team's virtually-based presentations and their success with their assigned challenges and service-learning activities.

2010 Challenge Activities

The Global Impact Apprentice: Environmental Challenge will involve the following activities:

  • Three (3) videoconferences with all six high schools participating;
  • On-going virtual dialogue and collaboration between partner schools via Skype;
  • Establishment and maintenence of team Facebook page;
  • Local service-learning activity within all six participating schools' communities;
  • End of program cultural exchange with winning team representatives visiting each others; region.



Number of Teams for this Challenge

Three (3) teams, each team comprised of one American high school and one Middle Eastern or North African high school - six schools in total. The six participating schools have been paired into three teams. The teams are:
  • Team 1 - McDowell High School - Erie, Pennsylvania & Modern Montessori School - Amman, Jordan
  • Team 2 - South Royalton School - South Royalton, Vermont & Shevah Mofet High School, Tel Aviv, Israel
  • Team 3 - Beaver Country Day School - Chestnut Hill, Massachusetts & Sadat City Languages School - Sadat City, Egypt



Participating Countries in the GIA 2010 Challenge

Egypt, Israel, Jordan and the United States.



Number of Students Eligible for Each School Team

Each school team should be comprised of 5 to 20 students for a total of 10 to 40 students comprising the joint team.
Each school should appoint
two co-captains and have a teacher designated as manager providing supervision and direction to the joint team. To view a list of teacher, captain and team member responsibilities, please click here.



Selection of Student Members of the Joint Team

Each of the six teachers will receive a Global Impact Apprentice Challenge application for distribution to their students. The application includes brief essay questions regarding the student's interest in the environment, cross-cultural dialogue and service-learning. The teacher and a GIA selection committee will use the application responses to determine who will be selected to serve on the school's team.



Who Are the Challenge Judges?

Empower Peace has selected (3) three environmental experts to serve as judges. These experts will be established professionals within the environmental sector.

Who Are the Challenge Virtual Hosts/Moderators?

Each of the three (3) videoconferences will be hosted and moderated by Empower Peace Founder Rick Rendon and Empower Peace Executive Director Tricia Raynard.

Length of Commitment to the Challenge

The length of commitment to the GIA Challenge is one (1) school year, beginning in September 2010 and running through June 2011.



How Will the Scoring Be Judged?

Each presentation/assignment will be awarded points by each judge. Each school will be given points individually and then they will be added to those of their partner school to derive a grand team total. Judges will award points from 1 (lowest) to 10 (highest) for each school presentation. At the conclusion of the three videoconferences, the dual-school team with the most points wins!



What Does the Winning Team of the Challenge Receive?

The grand prize winning team will have the opportunity to participate in a cultural exchange with their teammates abroad. Representatives from the American half of the winning team will have the opportunity to visit their teammates abroad and representatives from the MENA portion of the team will have the chance to visit their teammates in the United States.
